Whale & Dolphin Watching in the Muscat Area

Whale and dolphin watching is becoming increasingly popular around the globe. A recent assessment of the industry determined that whale and dolphin based tourism annually generates over 1 billion dollars worldwide (WDCS 2000), and this figure is likely to increase rapidly in the years to come.

Although some critics view whale-watching as another form of unwanted exploitation, when conducted properly, these tours can increase public awareness and appreciation of whales and dolphins. Tours that incorporate research and education opportunities can make a valuable contribution toward conservation of these intelligent and sensitive marine mammals. Responsible tour operators will take the animals' best interests to heart, avoiding any practices that might be stressful or disturbing for them.

Recently, a small number of tour operators in the Muscat area have started to capitalise on the abundance and variety of cetacean species found in local waters. Local residents and tourists from abroad can take commercially operated boat tours along the coast and marvel at the acrobatic displays of spinner dolphins, common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins. In the winter months, they also have a good chance of catching a glimpse of humpback or Bryde's whales.

Here is a list of operators offering dolphin watching in the Muscat area. But before you book your tour, have a look at our questions to consider when booking a whale or dolphin watching tour.
